Trying to manage a serious, chronic condition on your own can feel overwhelming. It can also take a toll on your mind, body and soul. That’s why the palliative care team at Adena is here to help ease your burden and work to improve the quality of life for you and your family.

Palliative care is a specialized medical care that provides relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the diagnosis. Our palliative care team works together to provide pain management and symptom control to achieve your care goals.

Located on the 2nd floor of Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, our five bed unit is designed for brief stays to address symptom management, family decision making and discharge planning.

Our care team includes an attending physician, advanced practice providers, a social worker and a chaplain. We will work closely with your primary doctor to provide coordinated care throughout your stay.

When to Consider Palliative Care

It’s never too early to start palliative care. In fact, palliative care can occur at the same time as other treatments for an illness and does not depend upon the course of a disease.

Ways to recognize the need for palliative care can include:

  • Difficult side effects from treatment
  • Frequent trips to the emergency room
  • Presence of multiple serious illnesses
  • Three or more admissions to the hospital with the same symptoms within a 12 month period
  • Uncontrolled symptoms
