Helping women feel their best again

No matter what stage of life a woman is in, imbalances in the body can wreak havoc on her energy and even her self-esteem if she doesn’t have the proper support.

That is where the experts at Adena Women’s Health can help.

The team of expert providers pay attention to women’s individual symptoms to help them feel their best again, whether they’re pregnant, menopausal, or somewhere in between.

“If you feel like something’s not right, come see us,” advises Neely Nelson Wade, MD, obstetrician and gynecologist with Adena Women’s Health. “We can do the detective work to determine the cause of your issue and offer solutions to get you feeling better.”

Some common symptoms described by patients include:

  • Bladder issues
  • Extreme fatigue
  • General weakness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Insomnia
  • Irregular periods
  • Migraines
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight gain

To determine what’s causing the symptoms, Dr. Wade says she considers a patient’s age, circumstances, and medical history. It’s common for her to perform a blood test to check for hormone levels, thyroid imbalances, and low iron in the blood.

“Patients with these symptoms could be suffering from hypothyroidism or anemia, two very common issues affecting women of all ages.”

Dr. Wade adds that anemia can be caused by heavy menstrual cycles. In addition, growths in the uterine cavity like polyps and fibroids can cause abnormal bleeding, which can lead to anemia.

“Polyps and fibroids can be detected through ultrasound and treated with surgery like ablation or a hysterectomy. And we want to rule out female cancers, which is why it’s important for women to have a yearly screening with their OB/GYN,” Dr. Wade says.

Perimenopause and menopause can also be the culprits causing exhaustion, moodiness, hot flashes, and night sweats. These symptoms can be treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as well as non-hormonal options.

Dr. Wade says trusted providers at Adena Women’s Health are also sensitive to mental health issues that could be causing women to feel off-kilter.

“Mood swings, decreased concentration, and a feeling of unease could be the result of mental issues such as anxiety or depression,” she says. “We refer patients to the Adena Counseling Center all the time to deal with grief, post-partum depression and other issues that can be treated with therapy and medication.”

Sometimes the solution can be as simple as better self-care.

“So many people burn the candle at both ends then wonder why they just don’t feel right,” Dr. Wade explains. “I recommend to all my patients the importance of exercise and leading a healthy lifestyle. If you’re constantly putting yourself on the back-burner, sooner or later you’ll start to feel bad.”

Whatever the diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Wade emphasizes that it may take time to feel better.

“Results won’t happen overnight,” Dr. Wade says. “It may take a few weeks, but starting treatment after we pinpoint your problem will eventually help you to feel better.”
