Three Good Things

Research shows that human beings have evolved to spend much more time thinking about negative experiences than positive ones. We spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong and how to fix it, or how to do it differently next time. This negative bias is the source of anxiety, depression and general lack of well-being. Directing our thoughts on purpose towards positive events has demonstrated that we can do a lot to correct this negative bias. Try “Three Good Things” to increase resilience, happiness and well-being.

Three Good Things for Personal Resiliency

  1. Each night before bed reflect on the three things that happened during that day that went well in your role and had a positive outcome.
  2. Write it down.
  3. Research has demonstrated by day four or five reflecting on the positive leads to increased happiness and a sense of well-being. Day fifteen is when the true shift happens.

Three Good Things for Personal Resiliency at Work

  1. Establish a regular practice of sharing three good things to shift individuals to experience positive thoughts and emotions.
  2. Share three good things in daily huddles, have an agenda item “three good things” for regular meetings and begin or end with caregivers with sharing three good things.
  3. “The key is to savor those positive emotions to retrain your brain to remember good things.”
