Why choose Adena Oncology Services?

The Adena Cancer Center, conveniently located close to home, boasts prestigious recognition. It has been awarded the highest accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. Furthermore, in 2020, our Radiation Oncology department was accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

We pride ourselves on offering all-encompassing, patient-focused care for every type of cancer. Our approach is collaborative, drawing on the expertise of various cancer specialists to ensure optimal treatment for our patients. Each patient benefits from a tailored care plan, crafted by our interdisciplinary tumor board in line with national cancer care standards. Throughout their journey, our Nurse Navigators stand by our patients, streamlining appointments and providing clarity on any queries. Beyond individualized care, our affiliation with the Columbus Community Clinical Oncology Research Program (NCORP) — a consortium of 14 esteemed institutions — grants our patients access to pioneering research and potential clinical trials for innovative cancer treatments.

Battling cancer demands a cohesive unit of skilled physicians, dedicated nurses, caregivers, and a patient navigator. As you navigate your cancer treatment, know that an extended team is always ready to support you.

Nutritional Guidance

Chemotherapy can sometimes lead to nausea or affect one's sense of taste. This can make it challenging for patients to maintain their appetite and get the necessary nutrition. At the Adena Cancer Center, we have a dedicated dietitian available once a week. This expert collaborates with patients undergoing chemotherapy, offering tailored dietary advice to alleviate nausea and ensure optimal nutrition.

Emotional and Community Support

Cancer's impact isn't just physical; it can also take an emotional toll. Our in-house social worker is here to bridge the gap, connecting patients with essential community resources and services. They also provide emotional support, addressing any concerns or anxieties patients and their families might have.

Financial Guidance

A cancer diagnosis can bring financial challenges. Our financial counselor at Adena is here to help. They assist patients in understanding their insurance benefits and identifying additional financial aids to manage treatment costs.

Rehabilitation Assistance

Some patients may require rehabilitation services post-treatment. Adena Rehabilitation Services caters to those with specific needs, such as lymphedema, a swelling condition often resulting from lymph node damage during treatment. Additionally, patients recovering from head and neck cancer treatments might benefit from our specialized speech therapy.

Pain Management Solutions

Pain can sometimes accompany cancer treatments. Studies, like those from the Mayo Clinic, indicate that a significant number of patients undergoing treatment experience pain. Our Adena Pain Management team is dedicated to helping those grappling with pain, whether it's from the treatment or the cancer itself.

Adena Hospice Care

Focusing on palliative care, Adena Hospice ensures patients receive the utmost care during terminal illnesses and the subsequent bereavement period. Our hospice services extend to patients in their homes, be it a traditional residence or a partnered nursing facility.

For our patient's convenience, we prioritize efficient scheduling. Our aim is to arrange appointments and tests within 72 hours of your call. At Adena, our commitment is unwavering: we are deeply devoted to our patients, ensuring their care, safety, and well-being.

Clinical Trials at Adena

Adena offers its patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. For more information about Adena's Cancer Care Center, and clinical trials, or to schedule an appointment, reach out to us at 740-542-3030.

Clinical trials pave the way for innovative cancer treatments. As new therapies demonstrate improved efficacy or similar effectiveness with reduced side effects, they progress toward becoming mainstream treatments.

Adena's Cancer Center collaborates with the Columbus Community Clinical Oncology Research Program (NCORP), a network of 14 institutions dedicated to pioneering research. We're also among the three hospitals participating in NCORP's Cancer Care Delivery Research (CCDR) initiative. The inaugural CCDR study will focus on the expenses of chemotherapy for colon cancer patients and its influence on their care.

Currently, Adena is conducting approximately 50 clinical trials exploring medication therapies for various cancers, including but not limited to breast, lung, colorectal, and head-and-neck cancers. These trials encompass chemotherapy drugs, biological agents, and medications to mitigate other treatment side effects.

Why Participate in Research?

Engaging in clinical trials at Adena grants patients access to some of the nation's most advanced treatments. Linda Kight, R.N., BSN, OCN, our clinical trials nurse, emphasizes the value of a robust research program. "Our patients benefit from cutting-edge treatments and are overseen by top-tier medical professionals."

For a comprehensive understanding of the advantages and potential risks, consult the National Institutes of Health. If you have queries or wish to join a trial, discuss them with your oncologist or request a conversation with our clinical trials nurse.

Understanding Clinical Trials

Clinical trials have stringent criteria to ensure accurate drug testing. Eligibility often depends on specific cancer types, stages, and other factors. Your physician might suggest a clinical trial, or if you're curious about ongoing studies, contact Linda Kight at 740-542-3071.

For a deeper dive into the clinical trial process, refer to the National Cancer Institute.

Survivorship Clinic

Post-treatment, the Survivorship Clinic aids patients in transitioning back to primary care, ensuring they feel secure and positive. This clinic emphasizes addressing treatment side effects and the potential need for rehabilitation. Every survivor receives a detailed treatment plan for future medical consultations.

During the survivorship consultation, our nurse practitioner will:

  • Conduct a thorough medical history review and physical examination.
  • Discuss the treatment summary, including chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.
  • Evaluate and manage any persistent or late effects of cancer and its treatment.
  • Offer guidance on health improvement and preventive measures.
  • Recommend cancer screenings and post-treatment follow-up care.
  • Coordinate consultations with nutritionists or social workers if required.
  • Share treatment details and care plans with the patient's primary care physician.
  • Provide the patient with a copy of the treatment summary and survivorship plan.

Currently, our survivorship clinics cater to patients with breast, colorectal, and head and neck cancers. Patients diagnosed with other cancers should consult their physician about the suitability of a survivorship program. For more details, engage with your treatment team.
